A 39-year-old Filipino stowed away on a San Diego-based destroyer for eight days before he was discovered, the Navy announced Tuesday.

The man, whose name was not released, apparently sneaked aboard the destroyer Harry W. Hill before it pulled out of Subic Bay on May 19 on its way home from the Persian Gulf. The Navy said he wanted to visit his family in the United States.

Officers on the warship believe the man hid for eight days in a shaft alley at the bottom of the ship. The man was discovered during an inspection May 27.

“It was quite a surprise for him and all concerned,” said one officer.

The Navy turned the stowaway over to immigration officers in Hawaii, and the Harry W. Hill steamed on to San Diego, arriving home Saturday as part of the aircraft carrier Ranger’s battle group.
