Woman, Boyfriend Held in Attempted Murder of Son
A woman and her boyfriend have been arrested in the attempted murder of her son, whom they apparently abandoned with head injuries at a Paramount hospital, authorities said Friday.
The 18-month-old boy, Juan Ortiz, was in critical condition Friday at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where he had been airlifted Thursday from Charter Suburban Hospital in Paramount, Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Stoneman said.
His mother, Lena Gamez, 19, and her boyfriend, George Macias, 24, had taken Juan to the hospital, but were vague with hospital administrators about where they lived or the cause of the boy’s illness. Soon after the couple left the hospital Thursday afternoon, doctors determined that the boy had suffered massive internal head trauma and called sheriff’s deputies to find the parents, Stoneman said.
The couple were found a short distance from the hospital and were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and held without bail.
