The gunman shot Schumdu and broke open several cases, stealing the jewelry, Thompson said.

Police would not say if Schumdu resisted, or make public the value of the stolen goods.

The other victim, a woman whose name was not revealed, was treated at Northridge Hospital Medical Center for a superficial gunshot wound to the left side and released, Nursing Supervisor Anne Lipman said. The woman was not employed at the jewelry store but was a friend of the owner, Thompson said.

A car used by the robbers was recovered three blocks away in the 10100 block of Ruffner Avenue near Romar Street, Thompson said. The car may have been stolen, police at the scene said.
