COMMENCEMENT 1991 : <i> A weekly roundup of Southland graduation ceremonies.</i>

UCLA

* UCLA conferred degrees on more than 8,000 graduates at its 72nd commencement. Its main commencement weekend began Friday. Author Carl Sagan (University of Chicago, 1954), delivered the keynote address and received the UCLA Medal at the Physical Sciences Division of the College of Letters and Science ceremony on Sunday. From Sagan’s address:

” . . . it is the responsibility of scientists never to suppress knowledge, no matter how awkward that knowledge is, no matter how it may bother those in power, we are not smart enough to decide which pieces of knowledge are permissible and which are not.”

Other UCLA commencements:

Additional College of Letters and Science commencement ceremonies included Life Sciences on Saturday, with physiology professor Jared Diamond (Harvard, 1958) as the keynote speaker; Humanities on Saturday, with associate English professor Valerie Smith (Bates College, 1975) as the keynote speaker, and Social Sciences on Sunday, with history professor Gary Nash (Princeton, 1955) as keynote speaker. The college conferred 5,505 degrees.

The Graduate School of Management conferred degrees on 498 graduates Friday. Keynote speaker was former U.S. Secretary of Labor James D. Hodgson (University of Minnesota, 1938). Hodgson was also awarded the UCLA Medal.

The School of Arts and School of Theater, Film and Television conferred degrees on 578 graduates Saturday. Keynote speaker was choreographer Bella Lewitzky.

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science conferred degrees on 68 graduates Saturday. Robert M. Hayes (UCLA, 1947), former dean at the school, delivered the keynote address.

The Graduate School of Education conferred 244 degrees on Saturday.

The School of Engineering and Applied Science featured Executive Vice Chancellor Murray Schwartz (University of Pennsylvania, 1949) as its keynote speaker. Degrees were conferred on 812 graduates on Saturday.

The School of Dentistry conferred 96 degrees Saturday. Dean Arthur A. Dugoni (DDS, University of the Pacific, 1948) delivered the keynote address.

The Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning featured County Supervisor Gloria Molina and architect Frank O. Gehry (USC, 1954) as its keynote speakers. Degrees were conferred Saturday on 183 graduates.

The School of Public Health conferred 264 degrees on Saturday. Dr. Joyce C. Lashof (Medical College of Pennsylvania, 1950), dean of public health at UC Berkeley, delivered the keynote address.

At the Ph.D hooding ceremony, Dean Victoria A. Fromkin (Ph.D, UCLA, 1965) delivered the keynote address. A total of 525 doctorate degrees were conferred on Sunday.

The School of Nursing featured Margaretta Styles (University of Florida), professor at UC San Francisco, as its keynote speaker on Sunday. Degrees were conferred on 182 graduates.

The School of Social Welfare conferred 78 degrees on Sunday. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) (Cal State Los Angeles) delivered the keynote address.

Cal State Los Angeles

* Cal State Los Angeles conferred 3,439 degrees on Saturday. Acting CSU Chancellor Ellis E. McCune (UCLA, 1948) delivered the keynote address.

Cal State San Bernardino

* Cal State San Bernardino conferred about 3,000 degrees Saturday. Lois Carson (Cal State San Bernardino, 1967), executive director of Riverside County’s Community Action Department, delivered the keynote address.

UC Riverside

* UC Riverside conferred about 1,700 degrees Saturday. Riverside County Superior Court Judge Charles D. Field (UC Riverside, 1958) was the speaker.

Woodbury University

* Woodbury University conferred 173 degrees on Saturday, with Donald E. Walker (USC, 1943), chancellor of Grossmont-Cuyamaca College District, as keynote speaker. An honorary degree was awarded to Donald S. Maxwell, vice president, accounting, Times Mirror Co.
