OXNARD : 400 Expected at Shark Tournament

More than 400 spectators are expected to attend the fifth annual Big Bucks Shark Tournament at Channel Island Harbor beginning Thursday, organizer Debbie Hagebusch said Monday.

The festivities will begin with a party at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lobster Trap restaurant at 3605 Peninsula Road in Oxnard. Late entrants can register at the party at $550 per boat, which is permitted to carry up to four anglers.

About 200 anglers on 55 boats are scheduled to take off from the harbor at 7 a.m. each morning from Friday to Sunday. Contestants are allowed to fish only for mako and thresher sharks.

Fish and blood will be thrown into the water to attract the sharks, which must be shot in the head before being tied to the boat. Anglers must to remove all lines from the water by 4:30 p.m.

The tournament will conclude with an awards banquet at the Lobster Trap on Sunday evening, during which $50,000 in prizes will be awarded.
