A Ramona, Calif., man was among three people who were in a seaplane that ditched while flying from California to Hawaii and were rescued Wednesday, the Coast Guard said.

A Navy P-3 Orion and a Coast Guard C-130 Hercules spotted the three people in the water wearing life jackets at 11:40 a.m. Hawaii time, and they were taken aboard the container ship Sealand Hawaii about 30 minutes later, Coast Guard spokesman Dennis Hubbard said.

Hubbard identified the three as Don Hauslik, 56, of Ramona; Nol Pederson, 44, an Australian now living in California, and Eva Akata, 26, also of California.

All three were suffering from hypothermia and will be taken to a hospital after the ship arrives in Honolulu this afternoon, Hubbard said.

There was no trace of the plane, he said.

The Grumman HU-16 Albatross seaplane went down 450 miles north of Hawaii island Tuesday afternoon during a flight from Santa Barbara to Maui. A search began after the Coast Guard received a call from the Oakland office of the Federal Aviation Administration, Hubbard said.

The Albatross had to ditch because of engine failure, he said.
