BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Tingley Might Have a Neck Injury

Share

Angel Manager Doug Rader said catcher Ron Tingley apparently suffered a neck injury when Tingley was hit by Bill Pecota’s bat as Pecota followed through on a swing during the first inning Monday.

Tingley had to be helped off the field, but Royal team physician Steve Joyce said Tingley was conscious and able to answer questions. Tingley spent the night in St. Luke’s Hospital.

Angel designated hitter Dave Parker opposes Commissioner Fay Vincent’s idea of eliminating the designated hitter.

“Did Fay Vincent ever play any baseball?” Parker said. “It wouldn’t affect me one way or another because it wouldn’t happen for five years and I won’t be in the game then. . . .

“Those players DHing now are forefathers to the younger players. They’ve had great careers and done a lot for the game. Is he saying they should be punished? It’s an injustice to the players who had great offensive stats.”

Vincent, who visited Royals Stadium Monday, also heard George Brett and Hal McRae advocate keeping the DH.

“I don’t think they should hold their breath and worry about it (being abolished soon),” Vincent said.

Lance Parrish is eligible to be activated off the disabled list today, but his strained right forearm hasn’t completely healed, the veteran catcher said. Activating him is an option, Rader said.

Third baseman Gary Gaetti was scratched before Monday’s game because of a strained left Achilles’ tendon. . . . Center fielder Junior Felix’s right calf muscle remains sore and made him unavailable to play. . . . Shortstop Dick Schofield (stiff right hamstring) didn’t start.

With 11 consecutive errorless games, the Angels are one game from tying the American League record set in 1963 by the Detroit Tigers. . . . First baseman Wally Joyner has an eight-game hitting streak and Parker has hits in his last nine. . . . The Angels reached double figures in hits for the sixth time in seven games.
