Hunks Need Not Apply for This Contest : Pageant: When Mr. Monterey Park walks down the ramp, it won’t be bulging biceps and a swimsuit-slim figure that got him there.

A beauty pageant it isn’t.

The 10 men vying for the title of Mr. Monterey Park won’t have to parade around in Speedos, disclose their body measurements or tap dance.

Instead, all they have to do is sell raffle tickets--at $1 apiece.

“We couldn’t convince them to wear swimming suits,” said Councilwoman Marie T. Purvis, who is helping organize the Mr. Monterey Park pageant. “You have to understand, this is not a beauty contest. All these men are not hunks.”

The rules of the pageant are simple: The contestant who sells the most raffle tickets will win. Each ticket entitles its holder to three drawings, each for 100 lottery tickets.

But the 10 contestants will do some strutting in public: They will model business suits, sportswear and other “low-key” attire for a fashion show during the Aug. 25 pageant, when the winner will be announced.

“Each one will come out with a woman on his arm . . . or probably with two,” Purvis said.

The winner, she said, will be honored with a crown and red cape. Once crowned, Mr. Monterey Park will have no specific duties, and the duration of his reign is indefinite.

The men come from all walks of life--real estate developers, hospital administrators, city officials, even Deputy Police Chief Dan Cross. They were nominated by local businesses, nonprofit organizations and service clubs.

A luncheon will be held Thursday to kick off the pageant and ticket drive, but Purvis said it isn’t too late to nominate more contestants.

Proceeds from the ticket sales and pageant will go to the Monterey Park Chamber of Commerce and the nonprofit groups that sponsor contestants.

The Aug. 25 pageant is open to the public. It will be held at 1 p.m. at the Luminarias restaurant. Tickets are $25 each. For more information, call the chamber at (818) 280-3864.
