Audiences sometimes say they hear the sounds of a bagpipe, a church organ or even a harpsichord when the California Guitar Trio plays.

At 8 p.m. Saturday, San Gabriel Valley residents can hear whatever sounds may resonate from the group’s three electric acoustic guitars.

Sponsored by the World Music Club, the Los Angeles-based trio will play at The Folk Tree Collection, 199 S. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena.

Hideyo Moriya, 33, grew up in Japan and played in a Tokyo rock band. Paul Richards, 26, grew up in Utah and has performed in country bands. Bert Lams, 32, grew up in Belgium and studied classical guitar.

They met four years ago in London, where they had the same guitar teacher and studied “new

standard tuning,” a style that Richards said “allows us to drop our cliches.”

The men tune the lowest string lower than the standard six-string guitar and the highest string higher than normal. “It’s a way to compose music that is new and fresh,” Richards says.

Saturday’s selections will range from Bach fugues to Appalachian folk tunes to the group’s own compositions.

Reservations are required for the 50-seat venue, which is a store and gallery. Reservations can be made by calling (818) 793-4828. Tickets are $8. There is also a one-time charge of $2 for membership in the World Music Club, set up by Folk Tree owner Rocky Behr and designed to present folk music in an intimate setting.
