ANAHEIM : Old Glory to Grace City Streets Again
- Share via
After two years without American flags flying over major public thoroughfares during national holidays, dozens of flags will again wave over the city, possibly as soon as Independence Day.
Thanks to a City Council allotment of $2,100 to American Legion Post 72 in Anaheim, volunteers from the veterans group will buy and hoist 70 new flags for the city.
“We used to put them out every year on every major holiday,” said Ann Totten, a group member. “Then we were too embarrassed to put the old, tattered ones out.”
Wear and tear on a set of flags purchased about a decade ago forced the group to discard them. The Legion had requested funds for new flags in recent years, finally getting the money from council this week.
The funds will go toward flags and poles that will be displayed in the central section of the city on holidays such as Independence Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day.
The Stars and Stripes will line parts of Harbor Boulevard and Anaheim Boulevard in the downtown area, and much of Lincoln Avenue.
