Kevin Mackey, former Cleveland State basketball coach, has been named coach of the Miami Tropics of the United States Basketball League. Cleveland State, which he led to the final 16 of the 1986 NCAA tournament, fired Mackey last summer for abusing alcohol and cocaine.
Mackey has been trying to rebuild his life since last July 13, when he was arrested in Cleveland after leaving a suspected drug house. He admitted he had abused drugs and alcohol for years.
He enrolled in a Houston treatment center operated by former NBA player John Lucas, spent three months in rehabilitation programs and says he hasn’t used alcohol or cocaine since last July. He is subject to drug testing under the terms of his new contract.
