Military Cuts Can Be Society’s Gain

Share

“Berman Feels the Heat Over Defense Cuts” doesn’t tell the whole story.

Cuts in military spending release funds for work in other sectors that provide more jobs per dollar than military work. It is well documented that building such projects as mass transportation facilities, schools, health facilities--and staffing them--is much more labor intensive than high-tech military work.

Moreover, such work improves everybody’s standard of living rather than merely creating a stockpile of obsolescent hardware.

More power to Rep. Howard L. Berman, Rep. Anthony C. Beilenson and other legislators who recognize that the value of building for life is a richly rewarding goal.
