Virginia M. Dalton; Retired Teacher

Virginia M. Dalton, who taught at Catholic schools in the San Fernando Valley for about 25 years, has died at her Sun Valley home. She was 72.

Mrs. Dalton died Monday of cancer, said her daughter, Virginia Ficco of Ouray, Colo.

Born in Norwood, Mass., she earned a teaching certificate from Framingham Teachers College in Framingham, Mass., and came to California in 1943. After settling in Sun Valley, she began teaching locally in 1953. Mrs. Dalton taught at St. Finbar Elementary School in Burbank, Mary Immaculate School in Pacoima and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Elementary School in Sun Valley, retiring from Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in the mid-1970s. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Elizabeth Ann Seton Mission Circle and Franciscan Seniors.

In addition to her daughter Virginia, Mrs. Dalton is survived by her husband of 47 years, James Dalton; son, John Dalton of Mill Valley, Calif.; daughter Margaret Kohls of San Dimas; sister, Frances Whiston of Boston; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 7800 Vineland Ave., in Sun Valley. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, Hollywood Hills. The Valley Funeral Home in Burbank is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Mrs. Dalton’s name to the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation.
