BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Valenzuela Might Go to Minors

Share

Angel President Richard Brown acknowledged “there is some oddity” to Fernando Valenzuela not working out with the team after getting medical clearance to pitch, but Brown said Wednesday he knows of no problem keeping Valenzuela away.

Valenzuela hasn’t pitched since June 12, after tests discovered “crimping” in an artery leading to his heart. The Angels want to send Valenzuela to the minor leagues on rehabilitation assignment, but he would have to approve such a move. Should he accept, the terms of his contract would have to be adjusted because the contract contains clauses based on the number of major league starts he makes.

Angel Senior Vice President Dan O’Brien has been attempting to clarify the situation with Valenzuela’s agents, Tony DeMarco and Dick Moss, but was having difficulty because Moss was out of town, Brown said.

Left-hander Scott Bailes was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday and Cliff Young was recalled from triple-A Edmonton.

Bailes sprained his right foot on Monday while walking in a corridor near the Angels’ clubhouse. The injury might heal in fewer than 15 days, but Manager Doug Rader wants to keep the bullpen at full strength with the starting rotation condensed to four.

Center fielder Junior Felix underwent a bone scan and a CAT-scan on his right calf, but no stress fracture was found. Trainer Ned Bergert said Felix won’t be allowed to run until after the All-Star break. . . . Jack Howell, who required three stitches Tuesday to close a cut on his right index finger, won’t throw for three days.
