SPORTSCOPE : Santa Monica Wrestler Wins Summer Games Title

Chuck Burns of Santa Monica High was named the outstanding wrestler in the L.A. Watts Summer Games after he won the 194-pound championship. His twin brother, Chris, won the 178-pound title.

Chuck finished second at 189 pounds in the 1991 state championships and was the Southern Section titlist at the same weight this season. Chris was the 1991 Southern Section champion at 171.

Other individuals from the Westside who were named outstanding performers at the games were guard James Gray of Westchester’s championship basketball team and Ronnie Williams of Dorsey. Williams had the fastest time of 11.34 seconds in two heats of the 100-meter dash and won the 200 in 23.08.

Santa Monica won the water polo championship and Heather Zand of Palisades won the girls’ singles tennis title.

Andrea Cecchi, a breaststroker for the UCLA men’s swim team, was named to the GTE Academic All-American At-Large team chosen by the Sports Information Directors of America. The team includes athletes from 15 NCAA sports.

Cecchi, a four-event All-American at the 1991 NCAA meet, has compiled a 3.47 grade-point average while majoring in kinesiology. A junior from Torino, Italy, Cecchi won the 100-meter breaststroke and also swam on the 200-meter medley relay team that set an American record at this year’s NCAA meet.

Erik Pichel of Palisades was named the boys’ player of the year in Los Angeles City 4-A Division volleyball.

First-team selections included Morgan Chapman and Lars Winter of Palisades and Jason Istok of University. Members of the second team included Keyvan Hariri of Palisades, Doug Hughes of Westchester and David Ottenfeld of University. The third team included Jason Hughes of Westchester, John Lee of Palisades and Matt Scoll of University.

Those who received honorable mention included Marty Leshin of Palisades and Phil Tongsak of University.

The Westchester High doubles team of Aaron Polk and Omar Yassin was selected to the All-Los Angeles City boys’ tennis team.

The third team included Saam Morshed of Palisades and Brian Newell of University in singles and Bill Harris-Justin Miller of Palisades, Chad Gordon-David Kravetz of Westchester and Marc Palazzo-Robert Zaharia of Palisades in doubles.

Santa Monica Crossroads School senior outfielder Kris Jones was named to the All-Southern Section Small Schools Division softball team. Her teammate, freshman infielder Jennifer Abramson, made the second team.

In the 4-A Division, the second team included Santa Monica senior catcher Kelli Brown and Culver City High sophomore infielder Heidi Cappell. Erin McAnany, Notre Dame Academy senior infielder, was selected to the 1-A second team.
