CHANNEL ISLANDS HARBOR : District Increases Water, Trash Fees

Beach homeowners along Silver Strand, Hollywood Beach and Hollywood-by-the-Sea face an increase in monthly water and trash rates, officials said Friday.

The board of the Channel Islands Beach Community Services District recently approved a $1.95-million budget for the 1991-92 fiscal year that also raises water connection fees for new construction. The increases went into effect July 1.

The small district provides water, sewer, trash and recycling services to about 1,800 homeowners and 40 businesses in the Channel Islands Harbor, said spokesman Ed Mills.

The trash rates in the district have been increased 12%, from $14.70 to $16.70 per month, Mills said.

The rate increases for garbage collection are the result of higher fees from Bailard Landfill and trash haulers, Mills said.

Monthly base water rates will increase from $7.25 to $8. Monthly water rates for families consuming between 500 and 2,000 cubic feet, currently at $1.65 per 100 cubic feet, will not change, Mills said.

However, for those customers who use more than 2,000 cubic feet per month, the cost will jump to $3.25 per hundred cubic feet, up from $2.85.

The monthly $12.05 sewer fee will not change, Mills said.

Increases in the water rate and connection fees are necessary to raise an additional $255,000 for capital improvements for the district’s sewer and water system and to replace equipment, Mills said.
