California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Holiday Traffic Toll Is Lowest in 30 Years

Fifty-seven people were killed in traffic accidents over the extended July Fourth holiday, the state’s lowest death toll in 30 years for the four-day period, the California Highway Patrol said. The drop may be traced to vigorous enforcement of drunk-driving laws and the increased number of people wearing seat belts, CHP spokesman Steve Kohler said. “Those two things combined probably had the most positive effect on lowering the number of fatalities,” he said.
