A woman who was driving through Hawthorne to work was killed early Thursday morning when a Datsun B-210 driven by a suspected drunk driver slammed into the rear of her Ford Thunderbird, police said.

Hawthorne Police Sgt. Robert Cooper said the woman was westbound on El Segundo Boulevard about 5:15 a.m. when she slowed for a red light at Prairie Avenue. About 80 feet from the intersection, the 1978 Datsun, driven by Juan Camacho, 29, of Modesto, plowed into the Thunderbird at about 80 m.p.h., exploding the gas tank of the woman’s car, Cooper said. As the woman tried to get out of the car, it flipped on its side, pinning her arm, he said. Seconds later, the Thunderbird was engulfed in flames.

Cooper said Camacho was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for treatment of internal injuries.
