Solomon Fails to Advance in Ventura Surfing Event
Donnie Solomon of Thousand Oaks failed to advance in the $35,000 Body Glove Summer Pro surfing tournament off Ventura on Thursday after officials called him on three paddling interferences in his heat.
Other local surfers who failed to advance included Sean Hayes of Ventura, Brian Weilbacher and Jesse Conlan of Oxnard and Jeff Faoro of Carpinteria.
Ventura’s Evan Slater and Santa Barbara’s Josh Bradbury did advance, however.
The event will continue through the weekend with the final scheduled for 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
The Westlake Tennis and Swim Club will play host to the United States Tennis Assn. National 45 Men’s Senior Hardcourt Tennis Championships on July 15-21.
Senior players from all over the country are expected to compete for the title.
Three local players--Nisie Sie of Thousand Oaks (No. 12), Gordon Davis of Encino (No. 14) and Tom Wiere of Encino (No. 15)--are seeded in the top 16.
The top-seeded player is Charles Hoeveler from Ross, Calif. First-round matches will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
The North Valley Criterium, sponsored by Granada Schwinn Shop, will be held Sunday on city streets beginning at the Coast Federal Bank in Granada Hills. The criterium is sanctioned by the U.S. Cycling Federation.
An estimated 450-600 participants will compete for a purse of $2,500.
