Quarterback Don Majkowski, who led Green Bay to within one victory of the 1989 playoffs before a shoulder injury sidelined him last season, signed a one-year contract.

The deal will pay Majkowski about $1.7 million in base salary and includes between $300,000 and $500,000 in incentives, agent Randy Vataha said.

Majkowski, 27, hoping to put behind him the 1990 season marred by the injury and an extended contract holdout, said it was important to him to sign before training camp began.

“It was something that just came from within,” Majkowski said. “Nobody was happy with last year’s season, team-wise, and I wasn’t very happy individually.”

Dan McGwire, the first quarterback selected in the draft, signed a three-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks worth a reported $3 million.

McGwire, the 16th selection in the draft, is the 10th first-round pick to reach agreement. The Seahawks did not disclose financial terms, but the Morning News Tribune of Tacoma reported the deal to be worth $1 million per season.

In two seasons at San Diego State, the 6-foot-8, 243-pound McGwire completed 528 of 889 passes for 7,484 yards, 43 touchdowns and 26 interceptions.

He was an All-Western Athletic Conference choice as a senior, finishing fourth in the country with a 148.6 quarterback rating.

Tight end Zeke Mowatt, fined for his involvement in a sexual harassment incident while with the New England Patriots last season, was signed by the New York Giants.

The signing came on the same day the Giants waived tight end Mark Bavaro after he flunked his physical. Bavaro underwent a bone graft on his left knee in February. Team physicians examined the knee Friday and advised him not to play again.

Mowatt played for New York from 1983 to 1989 before signing with the Patriots as a free agent last season.
