CHARGERS UPDATE : CAMP REPORT : Defensive End Hinkle In Camp, Several More are Still Talking

Share

Defensive end George Hinkle arrived in training camp Wednesday night to complete work on a new contract, but a pair of veteran starters and the team’s top four draft choices continue to negotiate with General Manager Bobby Beathard.

“Those that aren’t (under contract) I would expect to have a sense of urgency to get the (contract) signed,” Coach Dan Henning said, “and get in here if they want to be part of the team and help us out.”

The Chargers will work out as a full team for the first time later today, but starting right guard David Richards and starting right tackle Broderick Thompson remain unsigned.

“I didn’t hear from either one of them today,” Beathard said.

Beathard received updated contract proposals from second-round draft picks George Thornton and Eric Moten, but he said it would take further talks before a deal could be struck.

First-round pick Stanley Richard and second-round choice Eric Bieniemy also remain unsigned.

Leo Goeas, projected to start at left offensive tackle for the Chargers, has been given permission by Henning to report late to training camp.

“His father died last week and the funeral was (Tuesday),” Henning said. “We told him to take his time.”

And so it goes for the Chargers . . .

A youngster approached one of the team’s public relations assistants after practice and asked, “Is there anybody famous out here?”

The youngster was wearing No. 40, a number running back Gary Anderson wore before being traded to Tampa Bay.

“Why don’t you wear the number of somebody current on our team?” the public relations assistant suggested to the youngster.

The kid replied without hesitation, “This is Eric Bieniemy’s number, if he gets out of jail.”

The Chargers’ public relations department wants it to be known that Bieniemy, one of the team’s unsigned second-round picks, is not in jail.

Bieniemy, however, has had a number of difficulties with the police in the past. The Chargers said those difficulties have been resolved, however.

Quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver will participate in drills against the Rams in Saturday’s 2 p.m. scrimmage at UCSD, but Henning said he would not play in the scrimmage.

Henning said he expected the scrimmage to consist of 48 to 60 plays and that John Friesz and Bob Gagliano would split time. He said 18 to 20 of the team’s veteran players would be kept out of the scrimmage.

Defensive lineman Joe Phillips and offensive lineman Mark May will be given limited contact work. Phillips missed most of last season after being severely injured in a beating outside a Mission Bay restaurant; May missed the entire season with a knee injury.
