Sylmar’s Berganio Advances to Quarterfinals of U.S. Publinx

David Berganio Jr. of Sylmar, who won medalist honors during two stroke-play qualifying rounds, advanced Thursday to the quarterfinal round of match play of the 1991 U.S. Amateur Public Links championship in Columbus, Ind.
Berganio, an Alemany High graduate, defeated David Burns, of Louisville, Ky., in a close second-round match after 19 holes. He then beat Todd Thiele of Pittsburgh, 3 and 2, in the third round to earn a berth in the quarterfinal round.
Michael Combs, the 1990 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion, also advanced to the quarterfinals. He defeated Wayne Woolfall, of Chattanooga, Tenn., 3 and 2 in the second round, then beat Robert Friend, of Glen Allen, Va., 1 up.
The championship continues today with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of match play. It concludes Saturday with 36 holes in the final round of match play.
