SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : British Open Tees Off
On the weekend before the start of the National Football League’s exhibition season, the British Open, the return of Monica Seles and two Dodgers-Mets baseball games will highlight television viewing.
* Golf: The tradition-rich British Open, golf’s third major tournament of the year, will air today at 7 a.m. and Sunday at 6:30 a.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42. The Ameritech Senior Open will tee off today at 1:30 p.m. on KCBS Channel 2 and at 1 p.m. on KFMB Channel 8. Both stations will air the tournament Sunday at 1 p.m. Coverage of the LPGA JAL Big Apple tournament will begin today at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. on Channels 4, 36 and 39.
* Tennis: The Pathmark tournament will feature Monica Seles in her first tournament since her withdrawal from Wimbledon last month. Prime Ticket has a semifinal match tonight at 7 p.m. and the final Sunday at 4:30 p.m. The semifinals of the women’s Virginia Slims Tennis Hall of Fame Invitational will air tonight at 7 p.m. on SportsChannel. The singles and doubles finals will air Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Prime Ticket’s coverage of the men’s Sovran Bank tournament will begin today at 10 a.m. and continue at 4 p.m. The finals will air Sunday at 10 a.m.
* Baseball: The slumping Dodgers take on the New York Mets today at 10:15 a.m. on Channels 2 and 8 and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on KTTV Channel 11 and WWOR. The Atlanta Braves face the St. Louis Cardinals today at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. on TBS. ESPN’s 5 p.m. Sunday game matches the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates.
