Six candidates for superintendent of Fillmore Unified School District have been selected from a field of 42 applicants and will be interviewed this weekend, officials said Friday.

The $75,000-a-year position has been open since Marlene Davis resigned July 1 to take a job in her native Michigan.

The school board and a 15-member committee will spend Sunday interviewing the six finalists, said acting Supt. Bob Kernen. The committee includes a student, local residents, teachers, classroom aides and district administrators, he said.

Kernen said that 32 applicants were from California. The job also attracted candidates from nine other states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and South Dakota, Kernen said.

The names of the candidates were not released, but Kernen said 38 men and 4 women applied for the job; 28 had doctorates and 9 were already employed as school district superintendents. The six finalists are all Californians, he said.

On Monday, the two or three top candidates will discuss their educational philosophy and curriculum background in a second round of interviews, Kernen said.

The board is expected to make a final decision early next week, but will visit the candidate’s current school district before announcing their choice, he said.

The new superintendent may be presented to the public during a special meeting as early as Friday, Kernen said.
