Ten Ventura County women will receive awards from the Ventura County Commission for Women.

The winners of the 1991 Salute to Women awards were chosen from about 60 nominations countywide.

Six commissioners reviewed the nominations, Commissioner Kathy Long said.

The awards are primarily based on community service, Long said. “It’s an opportunity as a women’s commission to spotlight women who have been givers, contributors, and who have made a difference in their community,” she said.

Recipients are:

* Arts: Marianne Torrance Elcar of Santa Paula, general manager of the Santa Paula Theater Center; Business: Juanita Sanford of Oxnard, owner of Sanford Insurance Agency; Media: Nancy S. Cloutier of Ventura, owner, editor and publisher of the Ventura County and Coast Reporter; Health: Mary E. Schrock of Oxnard, clinical nurse at St. John’s Medical Center.

Three other awards are given for community service. Gail Beltramo of Camarillo received the award for a person employed in community service. Beltramo works with the Ventura County Ombudsman Program. Cathy Mullins of Ojai received the award as a person who is employed outside the home but has volunteered for community service.

Mullins works with Primary Purpose, a residential treatment center for substance abuse in Oxnard.

Dot Engel of Thousand Oaks will receive an award as a homemaker who has been active in community service. Engel, recently selected for the Ventura County grand jury, has been active with the League of Women Voters and the American Assn. of University Women.

The annual awards dinner is set for Aug. 11 at the home of Judge Charles McGrath and his wife, Beverlee, who is a member of the commission. Tickets, $18 each, are available by calling the commission at 652-7611.
