BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Gallagher Supports Decision

Share

Dave Gallagher said third base coach Bobby Knoop’s decision to send him from second base on Gary Gaetti’s eighth-inning single was “the right thing to do,” even though the Angels trailed, 5-2, and Gallagher was thrown out at the plate.

Mark Whiten’s throw from right field and a good block by catcher Joel Skinner erased that scoring attempt. “Right now, we’re not winning, so (that play) is bigger than it is,” Gallagher said. “(Whiten) made a heck of a throw and Skinner made a pretty good play short-hopping it.”

Jack Howell started in right field, his first appearance since July 2. He no longer is asked if he is injured; although a three-stitch cut on his right index finger sidelined him for a few days early this month, he has been available since the All-Star break.

Center fielder Junior Felix will report to Class-A Palm Springs to continue his rehabilitation from a pulled right calf muscle. He has not yet been cleared to play but can hit, throw and jog. Felix hasn’t played since June 19. . . . With a 3-7 record, the Angels had their second losing home stand of the season. They were 4-6 against the Oakland Athletics, Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners from April 15-24.
