SIMI VALLEY : Man Cited in Setting Off Burglar Alarm

A Simi Valley man has been cited for allegedly setting off his home alarm without a valid reason.

Richard Mann, a real estate broker, on Tuesday was issued a citation to appear in court after police responded to his alarm system, said Sgt. Bob Gardner of the Simi Valley Police Department.

Mann told officers who went to the house that he had intentionally set off the alarm to test whether police would respond, Gardner said.

“He was showing the system to a friend and thought we wouldn’t show up,” Gardner said.

Mann’s citation is the second since the city enacted its alarm ordinance in 1989, Gardner said. The first citation resulted in a $700 fine and three years probation for the violator.

The officer said setting off a home alarm system is dangerous because police are trained to suspect that a burglar may be in a house.
