Nick Chenowth and Steve Meichet shared the fastest qualifying time in the timed 200-meter sprint at U.S. Masters National Cycling Championships at the Velodrome in Balboa Park. Both clocked 11.5 seconds. Chenowth races in the 35-39 age division, Meichet in the 30-34. Others qualifying fastest in their age bracket were Vic Copeland (45-49), Tom Weisal (50-55) and women Sherry Malotte (women’s 30-35), Jackie Norton (35-39) and Alice Church (40-plus). Malotte and Church clocked 13.1 seconds, Norton 13.5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Scott Fortune of the United States national volleyball team will be honored at the World League Final Four Championship this weekend in Milan, Italy, for leading the World League in digs and receptions per game.

Bryan Ivie was the only other American among the top three in the league’s statistical categories. Ivie, the two-time NCAA player of the year from USC, finished third in aces per game.

The U.S. finished third in the World League with a 6-10 record, winning five games more than last year. They closed the season Sunday with a five-game victory over the Soviet Union in Irvine.

JUNIOR GOLF

Greg Padilla of Rancho Santa Fe is in sixth place in the 13-14 division after two rounds at the Todd Moore Memorial Junior golf tournament at the 6,591-yard, par-72 Fairway Oaks Country Club in Abilene, Tex. Padilla’s 158 total is 17 strokes behind Torrance’s Ted Oh and 10 strokes off second place. La Jolla’s John Rudolph is 14th at 167.
