Dukes’ Latest Lineup to Face New Jersey
Trying to end a two-match losing streak, the Newport Beach Dukes will play the New Jersey Stars at 7 tonight at the John Wayne Tennis Club.
Coach Greg Patton said it marks the start of a new season for the 2-5 Dukes, who finally seem to have their lineup in order. Players have come and gone due to injuries and prior commitments.
Now, Patton hopes the foursome of Elise Burgin, Amy Frazier, Rick Leach and Tim Pawsat will stay together for the final seven regular-season matches.
“I felt like I was with an adoption agency,” Patton said. “Right now, I’m happy and content.”
Frazier and Leach, the newest Dukes, spent the past two matches playing one set each in accordance with TeamTennis rules against ringers. Now, Patton is free to play them as much as he likes.
“Can you imagine what Lasorda would say if he had to play Orel Hershiser at catcher?” Patton said. “That’s the way it’s been only being able to play Ricky and Amy one set.”
