U.S. Prosecutor Karlin Named to Superior Court
Gov. Pete Wilson on Thursday appointed a Los Angeles federal prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Atty. Joyce A. Karlin, to the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Karlin was a co-prosecutor in the trial of former federal drug agent Darnell Garcia, recently convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering. As such, she played a major role in a massive investigation into the worst scandal in the history of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Last Monday, Garcia was sentenced to 80 years in prison.
Karlin, 40, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, is the chief of the U.S. Attorney’s Major Crimes Unit. Her husband, Assistant U.S. Atty. William F. Fahey, is the first assistant chief of the criminal division. Karlin “has developed a reputation for being a tough prosecutor who has successfully fought for stricter sentences for gang members and criminals who sell drugs to children,” Wilson said.
