Les Herrick; Musician

Les Herrick, a professional musician who played the trumpet in local dance bands, has died at a Van Nuys hospital. He was 77.

A resident of Reseda, Herrick died Monday of complications of a stroke he suffered in June, said his son, Steve Herrick of Fallbrook, Calif.

Born in Beaver Dam, Wis., Herrick worked as a professional musician in the Midwest before moving to California in 1952. He played the trumpet in various local dance bands and also worked as a shipping and receiving clerk and later had a rug cleaning business. At 70, Herrick made a record that was played on local jazz radio stations.

In addition to his son Steve, Herrick is survived by his sons Joey Herrick of Northridge and Jeffrey Herrick of Westminster; two brothers; one sister; and four grandchildren. His wife, Anne Herrick, died in 1969.

A graveside service is planned at 11 a.m. today at San Fernando Mission Cemetery, 11160 Stranwood Ave., in Mission Hills.

Praiswater Funeral Home in Van Nuys is handling the arrangements.

Donations can be made in Herrick’s name to the Valley Presbyterian Hospital Foundation.
