SPORTSCOPE : Bicycle Race Is Scheduled for Sunday

The 30th annual Manhattan Beach Grand Prix bicycle race, the premier road cycling event of the year in the South Bay, will take place Sunday with 35 races in various age groups and categories between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Live Oak Park.

The feature event, the pro-am, will start on a 1.4-mile circuit along Valley Drive at 1 p.m.

A national field of competitors will include former U.S. and Pan American champion Davis Phinney and Tour de France veteran Jeff Pierce. They will be among the participants competing for $5,000 in cash and prizes.

Eight of the races are for licensed U.S. Cycling Federation competitors. The remaining races are open to the public. There will be age-group divisions for men and women and type of bicycle.

Registration for the races is open up to one hour before the starting time. The daylong program will also include a show of classic and antique bicycles, a police chiefs’ race and booths displaying cycling gear.

The team of Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes defeated Brent Frohoff and John Hanley, 15-5, to win a pro beach volleyball tournament in Chicago Sunday.

Kiraly of San Clemente and Steffes of Pacific Palisades each won $10,000. Frohoff of Hermosa Beach and Hanley of Santa Monica each won $6,000.

Mike Dodd of Manhattan Beach and Ricci Luyties of Pacific Palisades each earned $3,750 for their fourth-place finish.

The men’s tour will stop in Milwaukee this weekend for a $75,000 tournament.
