A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of raping and killing a woman whose body was found in a culvert in Carlsbad, police said Friday.

Michael McKenzie, of San Diego, was arrested about 5:15 p.m. Thursday by detectives from the Carlsbad Police Department.

When he was arrested, McKenzie had scratches on his face and was found with some personal property that had belonged to the dead woman, Tina Daniele, police said.

Daniele’s body was found Tuesday in the 2500 block of El Camino Real. She was partly clothed and had been beaten. McKenzie and Daniele had allegedly known each other from their employment and residence at a homeless shelter.

The two had reportedly been seen arguing and walking near where Daniele’s body was found.

According to police, McKenzie said he had been drinking with Daniele before she died, but he knew nothing about her death.

He is being held at County Jail in Vista without bail until his arraignment, scheduled Monday.
