The Rev. Christine L. Lofton; Minister

The Rev. Christine L. Lofton, who founded the New Pentecost No. 2 Church in Pacoima, has died in a Mission Hills hospital.

A longtime Pacoima resident, Mrs. Lofton died Sunday of cancer, said her daughter, Betty Williams of Pacoima. She was 77.

Born in Ivanhoe, Va., Mrs. Lofton came to California in 1962 and held Sunday school lessons and prayer services in her San Fernando home. In 1986, she founded the New Pentecost No. 2 Church in Pacoima. Mrs. Lofton, an ordained minister who earned a doctorate degree from United Christian Institute at age 73, led the church until her death.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Lofton is survived by her brother, Charles Allen of Wilmington, Del., five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, Raymond H. Lofton, died in 1968.

A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the Greater Community Baptist Church, 11066 Norris Ave., in Pacoima. Burial will follow at Eternal Valley Mortuary in Newhall. Rucker’s Mortuary in Pacoima is handling the arrangements.
