California IN BRIEF : SAN DIEGO : Probe of Police Finds Misconduct

A 10-month investigation into alleged corruption within the San Diego Police Department has uncovered “wholesale irregularities” in the way a narcotics street team dealt with informants in the mid-1980s, including evidence that officers used them for “casual sex,” according to a report. The Metropolitan Homicide Task Force, investigating the corruption charges, also found evidence that the narcotics team allowed informants to keep small portions of narcotics used in drug buys and was plagued by “pervasive mismanagement, misconduct and unprofessional activity.” The report concluded evidence was insufficient to bring criminal charges against specific officers.
