Celebrating Leo Carrillo

In commemoration of actor Leo Carrillo’s 111th birthday, the City of Carlsbad is sponsoring a festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Public Safety Center on Faraday Drive.

The event will feature screenings of the late actor’s work, food, live country western music and displays of Carrillo memorabilia, including his custom-built 1948 Chrysler convertible.

Carrillo appeared in films, including “Viva Villa” in 1934, and portrayed Pancho on the early TV series, “Cisco Kid.” “Viva Villa” will be shown at 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.; “Cisco Kid” episodes will be shown at noon, 12:30, 1, 2:30, 3, and 3:30 p.m. Also, Spanish episodes will be shown at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Joel Reese Band will play until 2:30 p.m.

Admission to the festival is free. Donations will help defray the costs of development, operation and maintenance of Carrillo’s old “Flying LC Ranch” in southeast Carlsbad.
