2 Con Men Use ‘Pigeon Drop’ to Get $3,600

A 76-year-old woman was defrauded of $3,600 in a “pigeon drop” scheme by two men Friday, police said.

The victim was not identified, but police spokeswoman Cindy Knapp said the woman was conned as she was walking to her car in a shopping center parking lot in the 2100 block of West La Habra Boulevard.

A man who spoke only in Spanish walked up to the woman to ask whether she knew where he could cash his $100,000 winning Lotto ticket. If she helped him, the man promised, he would sell her a share in the winning ticket, Knapp said.

A second suspect joined them on the sidewalk and said he too wanted to buy a share in the winning ticket. The second suspect “verified” that it was a winning ticket, Knapp said.

The woman went to two banks and withdrew cash for her percentage of the phony ticket, Knapp said.
