San Diego Police announced Saturday that 20 arrests were made late Friday in a decoy operation waged against liquor and convenience stores that sell to minors.

Police said the operation began Friday evening and continued until early Saturday, with 18-to-19-year-old undercover operators acting as field agents.

Detectives inspected 86 establishments and arrested 20 merchants for selling alcohol to minors, said Lt. Dave Bejarano of the San Diego Police vice unit. Bejarano said a similar operation last May netted seven arrests out of 41 establishments.

He said the method of targeting establishments was based on citizen complaints, prior knowledge of such activity and random selection.

Bejarano said similar operations in the past have “consistently yielded one violation for every three establishments contacted.”
