Scott Secules and Scott Miller put on a fourth-quarter aerial show and E.J. Junior returned an interception for a touchdown to lift the Miami Dolphins to a 19-17 victory over the Raiders in an NFL exhibition game at the Tokyo Dome today.

With almost 50,000 spectators roaring their approval, Secules hit Miller with passes of 13, 34 and 20 yards, the last one for a touchdown that gave Miami a 13-10 lead. Two minutes later, Junior grabbed Steve Beuerlein’s pass off Doug Lloyd’s fingertips and ran 38 yards for a score.

The Dolphins, shut out 6-0 by the Chicago Bears in their first game, scored their first points of the exhibition season on their opening drive, when Charlie Baumann kicked a 22-yard field goal.

On the seventh play of the drive, Dan Marino passed 34 yards to Mark Duper at

the Raider one. But Sammie Smith lost four yards on the next play and two passes by Marino went incomplete, including one dropped by Smith. The Dolphins settled for the field goal.

Mistakes and penalties dogged the Raiders throughout the first half. Their first possession ended in Vance Mueller’s fumble.

On their second, Jay Schroeder connected with Willie Gault on a 41-yard pass to the Miami 17, but a holding penalty nullified the play.

Even a perfect punt by Jeff Gossett that angled out of bounds just outside the Miami end zone was called back for a penalty late in the second quarter. The next kick went to Miami’s 26, and from there the Dolphins drove to their second field goal, a 48-yarder by Baumann with 24 seconds left in the first half.

In the second half, however, Vince Evans got the Raiders moving. On their second possession of the half, Evans’ third consecutive completion was a 31-yard scoring toss to Sam Graddy that gave the Raiders the lead, 7-6.

After the Raider defense threw Miami quarterback Scott Mitchell for two deep losses, Evans moved the Raiders to the Dolphins’ eight. The big plays in the drive were passes of 13 yards to Mike Alexander and 20 yards to Doug Lloyd. But Evans couldn’t connect from the eight, and the Raiders had to settle for Jeff Jaeger’s 25-yard field goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

The Dolphins sent in Secules at quarterback and he needed only six plays to put Miami back in front. He hit Miller for 13 yards, ran for 15, hit Miller for 34 and then found Miller in the end zone from 20 yards away to regain the lead for the Dolphins.

Miami added to its advantage two minutes later when Beuerlein’s pass tipped off the hands of Lloyd and Junior grabbed it and ran 38 yards for the score. Baumann missed the extra point with nine minutes left to play, making it 19-10.

Secules fumbled on a sack by Mike Jones with 3 1/2 minutes to play, and A.J. Jimerson recovered. Beuerlein rolled out and found Andrew Glover alone for a touchdown to make it 19-17.

Jaeger’s 56-yard field goal attempt with 34 seconds left narrowly missed for the Raiders.
