A county work crew removing weeds from a vacant lot in Rancho Palos Verdes found the remains of a man, authorities said Wednesday. Investigators were looking into the possibility that the man was a Wilmington resident reported missing in late May.

The Los Angeles County weed-abatement crew found the body when they began to clear the lot on Crenshaw Boulevard west of Park Place about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Linnemeyer said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the man had been at the location for “quite some time following his death,” Linnemeyer said. The cause of the man’s death and his identity were not immediately known. An autopsy was planned.
