Klein to Face Voorhees in U.S. Amateur After Posting 19-Hole Win
It was a long day for a couple of Gladwyne, Pa., residents in the opening round of match play Wednesday in the United States Women’s Amateur golf championship in Hutchinson, Kan.
Emilee Klein of Studio City, one stroke off the pace after the first two rounds of stroke play, beat Elizabeth Haines on the 19th hole of their match, and medalist Amy Fruhwirth of Phoenix beat Margaret Young, 5 and 4. Both Haines and Young hail from Gladwyne.
Klein, 17, who will be a senior at Notre Dame High in the fall, is bidding to become the youngest golfer to win the U.S. Women’s Amateur title. She will continue match play today at the 6,076-yard, par-72 Prairie Dunes Country Club course against Heidi Voorhees, also of Studio City.
Voorhees, who also attended Notre Dame, defeated Tracy Cone of Vancouver, Wash., 5 and 4. Voorhees, who will be a sophomore at USC in the fall, was the No. 1 player for the Trojan women’s team last season.
Klein and Voorhees have been on hot streaks. Klein won the U.S. Junior girls’ championship in Wichita, Kan., last week, and, in May, Voorhees won the Los Angeles city women’s championship.
The semifinals of the U.S. Amateur will be played Friday and the final is set for Saturday.
