PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Test Shows Perry’s Injury Not Serious

The Rams gave tackle Gerald Perry, who has lingering pain in his left knee, an MRI test Thursday and found no major cartilage damage.

Perry injured the knee on his first full day of practice with the team last week. Despite the encouraging test result, Perry might miss the team’s home exhibition opener Monday night against the San Diego Chargers.

“It’s one of those things where he’s got some pain,” Rams Coach John Robinson said Thursday. “Do you fight your way through it, say, ‘Let’s go, let’s fight our way through it,’ or do you say, ‘Let’s wait.’ We’ll know better today.”

Robinson, while coyly pointing out that tailback Gaston Green slowed his torrid preseason pace in the Denver Broncos’ most recent game, said he was pleased Green has done so well since the Rams traded him during the draft.

Before he rushed for 10 yards on six carries Tuesday against San Francisco, Green had been the star of the Broncos’ preseason. As a Ram, Green did well during the preseasons before vanishing during the regular season.

“When the deal was made, I remember telling him, ‘I think that they fit you,’ ” Robinson said, referring to the Broncos’ philosophy of getting their running backs into the open field instead of asking them to power through the line of scrimmage. “There’s a good fit there.

“He deserves something good to happen to him. He never did anything wrong (in his three years with the Rams). He wasn’t lazy. Everything I asked him to do, he did.”

Tailback Marcus Dupree has a sore toe on his right foot after taking a late hit from defensive back Brandy Wells in Wednesday morning’s practice. Although the injury isn’t serious, Robinson said the team would let him rest until it is healed, which might keep Dupree out of the team’s exhibition game Monday night. . . . Guard Joe Millinichik was held out of practice after suffering from dehydration recently. . . . Robinson said cornerback Darryl Henley, who has gradually worked his way up to full-speed after injuring his left hamstring early in camp, probably will play Monday.
