The Raiders have contacted the Houston Oilers about acquiring holdout defensive end Sean Jones, the Houston Post is reporting in its Sunday edition.

“Yes, the Raiders have expressed interest,” Oiler General Manager Mike Holovak told the newspaper.

Holovak said three teams--the Raiders, Washington Redskins, and Denver Broncos--have inquired about Jones, but that the Oilers want a comparable defensive lineman in return.

The Broncos and Redskins don’t have much to offer, but the Raiders have depth at the position and possess a holdout defensive lineman of their own, Scott Davis.

Jones played four seasons for the Raiders, from 1984 through 1987, before he was traded to Houston in 1988 for draft choices.

Jones recorded 12 1/2 sacks last season, and is seeking to improve on his 1990 salary of $795,000. Last year was Jones’ best season since 1986, when he led the AFC with 15 1/2 sacks.

Holovak told the Post that no trade decision on Jones would be made before Monday.

The Raiders will break camp at Oxnard on Thursday, with two exhibition games remaining. Coach Art Shell said he wants his team back at the El Segundo complex a full two weeks before the Sept. 1 season opener against the Houston Oilers. “It’s just to get them acclimated,” Shell said. “We’ve been at camp awhile. Some people need to get a place to stay.” . . . Raider rookie tailback Nick Bell, who suffered a serious hamstring pull last week in Tokyo, is rehabilitating by walking long distances around the team’s training fields. Bell is expected to be out at least a month. . . . Tight end Mike Dyal, on the physically unable to perform list, is swimming in the hotel pool to strengthen his injured knee. . . . Where does right tackle Steve Wright get his athletic talent? The Raiders Newspaper reports that Wright’s mother, Marcia, won gold and silver medals in synchronized swimming at the Arizona Senior Olympics in February.
