The Texas Rangers’ Nolan Ryan threw from a mound for the first time since going on the disabled list July 29 and felt good, but not good enough to return to the starting rotation.

Ryan is on the disabled list for the second time this season because of an injured muscle in the back of his right shoulder. He is eligible to be reactivated today.

Ryan (7-5) said he will throw again off the mound today “and increase the workload. If everything goes well there, I’ll try to figure out the date when I’d fit back in the rotation.”

Ryan could start again Aug. 19, when the Rangers begin a three-game home stand against Baltimore.

Ranger outfielder Kevin Reimer was suspended for three games by Bobby Brown, American League president, for charging Milwaukee Brewer pitcher Chris Bosio on Aug. 4. Reimer had been hit on the leg by a Bosio pitch.

Pitchers Ken Howell and Pat Combs will sit out the rest of the season because of injuries, the Philadelphia Phillies said. Both had been on minor league rehabilitation assignments.
