Basketball Court Named for Slain High School Star

A basketball court in a Glendale park was dedicated by the city Tuesday to the memory of Berlyn Cosman, a 17-year-old star basketball player who was shot to death June 1 in an Anaheim hotel room while attending a prom-night party.

About 130 of Cosman’s family members, friends and teammates joined city officials in a ceremony at Montrose Park, 3529 Clifton Place, where the former Crescenta Valley High School student had frequently practiced. A bronze plaque will later be seated at the base of a basketball standard.

A former Crescenta Valley High School football player has been charged with Cosman’s murder. Paul Michael Crowder, 19, is scheduled to appear for trial Aug. 19 in Orange County Superior Court. An Orange County judge last week denied a request that the charge against Crowder be lowered to manslaughter.

He is being held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
