San Diego Physician to Head State Agency

Dr. John J. Howard, a San Diego physician, was appointed Thursday by Gov. Pete Wilson as chief of the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Howard, 44, for the past four years has served as assistant professor at the Occupational Health Center of the UC Department of Medicine. Before that, he was a physician for Kaiser Permanente of Los Angeles.

The $78,252-per-year post requires state Senate confirmation.
