The Cleveland Indians claimed outfielder Jose Gonzalez off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates and optioned pitcher Mauro Gozzo to triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday.

Gonzalez, 27, started the year with the Dodgers and went hitless in 28 at bats before being traded to the Pirates on July 3 for outfielder Mitch Webster.

At Pittsburgh, Gonzalez appeared in 16 games, batting .100 (two for 20), with a home run and three RBIs.

Outfielder Cory Snyder, designated for assignment last week when Toronto acquired Candy Maldonado from the Milwaukee Brewers, has agreed to join the Blue Jays’ triple-A club at Syracuse. . . . Texas Ranger second baseman Julio Franco may be out for as long as six weeks because of a heel injury, according to the team. “I’m not going to miss that much,” said Franco, who is batting .335. “I’ll do something. I’ll have them tape it up.” . . . The San Francisco Giants signed free-agent second baseman Tommy Herr on Thursday and put infielder Greg Litton on the 15-day disabled list. . . . Milwaukee Brewer left-hander Teddy Higuera, on the disabled list with a torn rotator cuff, will have arthroscopic surgery Aug. 23, the team said Thursday.
