Promoter Don King announced that Julio Cesar Chavez, the WBC super-lightweight champion, will fight unranked Lonnie Smith on Sept. 14.
Greg Haugen originally was scheduled to meet Chavez, unbeaten in 75 fights, on Sept. 14, but pulled out of the bout because of contract differences with King.
However, Terrence Alli, U.S. Boxing Assn. junior welterweight champion, claims he has a contract to fight Chavez on the same day.
Problems could arise because Smith (29-2-1) is not ranked by any of boxing’s major organizations. According to boxing rules, a champion must defend his title against a ranked fighter.
