Browns Win in Overtime
Matt Stover kicked a 40-yard field goal in overtime Friday night to lift the Cleveland Browns over the Washington Redskins, 24-21, in an NFL exhibition game.
Stover made good on a second chance three minutes after missing a 44-yard attempt on the Browns’ first overtime possession. The winning kick was set up when Redskin reserve quarterback Cary Conklin fumbled on his 28 and defensive back Anthony Florence recovered.
The Browns forced the overtime when backup quarterback Todd Philcox threw a three-yard touchdown pass to former Redskin Mike Oliphant with no time remaining and Stover made the extra point to tie the score, 21-21. The touchdown capped an 80-yard drive after the Redskins’ Chip Lohmiller missed a 47-yard field goal attempt.
A 40-yard pass play, Philcox to Vernon Jones, helped move the Browns downfield on their first possession in overtime.
