LEAN TIMES: As county officials consider keeping state armories closed to street dwellers this winter, the YWCA’s 19-room Hotel for Homeless Women reports being filled every night--and sending many destitute women back to the streets. Five years ago, when the shelter opened, “we were turning away eight to 10 women. Now it’s double that and more every day,” says YWCA director Mary Douglas “It’s an indicator of what’s happening in the county. . . . There’s still a myth in some areas that everything is wonderful.”
